his practice. Price's work has been featured in solo exhibitions at =

Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York and The Art Gallery of Ontario, at =

Guyton and Joseph Logan.

SUNDAY SCENE / Emma Cottreau

Emma Cottreau is an art history graduate of McGill University and a =

Curatorial Intern at The Power Plant.

ON at The Power Plant this winter:

STEVEN SHEARER
In collaboration with Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, UK, this is the =

first major survey of the Vancouver artist's work, and includes =

photography, painting, drawing, collage and sculpture that probe =

Heavy Metal and other facets of masculine adolescent culture. All of =

Shearer's works originate from his personal =91archive' of more than =

36,000 reproductions, snapshots and JPEGs. Viewing Heavy Metal =

merchandise on eBay as a form of proletarian folk art, Shearer =

painstakingly reproduces such amateur documentation in his collages =

and prints. The exhibition is co-curated by Helena Reckitt, Senior =

Curator of Programs at The Power Plant and Nigel Prince, Curator at =

Ikon Gallery.

=91Steven Shearer' is presented in Canada with the support of ROGERS. =

The Power Plant would also like to acknowledge the support of The =

International Cultural Relations Division at Foreign Affairs and =

International Trade Canada (DFAIT) with the assistance of the =

Canadian High Commission in London.

ANDREA BOWERS: THE WEIGHT OF RELEVANCE
The Power Plant introduces the work of Andrea Bowers to Canadian =

audiences with an exhibition that addresses the legacy of AIDS =

activism. Timed to open on World AIDS Day 2007, =91The Weight of =

Relevance' is a major multi-media installation that focuses on the =

current state of the AIDS Memorial Quilt-the largest piece of folk =

art in the world-and on the people who maintain and display this =

monumental cultural artifact.

Bowers is an artist based in Los Angeles whose work investigates the =

intersection between activism and art. The exhibition includes video, =

drawings, books and a light work, as well as new works made for The =

Power Plant that make particular reference to HIV/AIDS art and =

activism in Canada. =91The Weight of Relevance' continues a 20-year =

tradition of presenting exhibitions on HIV/AIDS-related art and =

activism at The Power Plant.

STEPHEN ANDREWS: CARTOON
Like Shearer and Bowers, the third solo show this winter features an =

artist who uses archival materials and found footage. Since 2002, =

Stephen Andrews has taken images of the Iraq war from the Internet =

and hand-rendered them in crayon drawings rubbed over a window-screen =

on mylar. This technique imitates the CYMK dot-matrix of a newspaper =

image. For =91Cartoon', his first solo exhibition at The Power Plant, =

Andrews presents an animation and related drawings that allude to the =

violence and consumerist motivations for the situation in the Middle =

East. =91Cartoon' is curated by The Power Plant's Assistant Curator, =

Swapna Tamhane.

Toronto during the release week for her fourth album, Nevertheless, =

Christine Fellows returns for an official CD release celebration, =

featuring an intimate acoustic performance with a chamber ensemble, =

along with stunning art projections created and performed by visual =

artist Shary Boyle.

Since folks at Spin Magazine and Pitchfork buzzed about her last =

work, Paper Anniversary, and noted musicians like John Darnielle (of =

The Mountain Goats) were singing her praises ("That Christine Fellows =

album is just shockingly great."), it's no wonder that Eye, Uptown =

Magazine and Winnipeg Sun are handing out four star reviews while the =

Globe & Mail are raving about her new tunes live. She's even managed =

to land herself on a couple of =93Best Of=94 lists already at the Coast =

Between time on tour through the US, her Shadow Songs project with =

renowned visual artist Shary Boyle spanning Canada, and creating =

compositions for television, film, and contemporary dance, Christine =

09. Loop Gallery - RICHARD MONGIAT / MAUREEN PAXTON - to Jan 6
----------------------------------------------------------------

Loop Gallery presents:

RICHARD MONGIAT
Weeds and Wildflowers

MAUREEN PAXTON
The Ape Paintings

December 7 - January 6, 2007

Loop Gallery is pleased to announce exhibitions by Loop members RICHARD
MONGIAT entitled Weeds and Wildflowers and MAUREEN PAXTON entitled The
Ape Paintings.

RICHARD MONGIAT's new richly layered paintings bustle with energy,
their overlapping forms jostle and engulf each other to create a
tangled garden of colour, shape and texture. Mongiat writes:

=93After inheriting the care of a large and unruly garden, I discovered
by surprise that the actual process of gardening started to closely
resemble my concerns and activities in the studio. What to put in the
bald patch by the peonies? What needs more light? How to bring some
colour to that far corner near the back? Moving plants around was not
dissimilar from moving paint around. After spending morning after
morning in the garden, once in the studio I began to notice organic
shapes sprouting up like weeds all over the paintings. Flower and petal
shapes, tangled vines, earthy textures and watering cans all started to
infest my imagery. While previously I had relied on a ruthless regime
of visual editing to achieve a finished painting, now, like my
overgrown garden, I allowed the spaces to fill in, constantly working
into them, adding more paint here, shapes and textures there.=94

Catherine Beaudette and Richard Mongiat founded loop gallery in March
of 2000. This is Richard's fifth exhibition at loop. He has also been
showing his work within the Toronto art community and art centres
throughout Canada for the past 25 years.

MAUREEN PAXTON's new work responds to a short fictional piece written
by Franz Kafka in 1917, titled =93A Report to an Academy.=94 In it, the
narrator has been asked to recount details of his transformation from
ape to man.Declaring that he remembers little prior to being wounded
and taken captive off West Africa's Gold Coast, he nonetheless can
recall the grim transatlantic voyage back to Europe. He is caged and
tormented.

Knowing that he faces a future as a zoological exhibit, he decides to
apply all his gifts for mimicry towards becoming human. In describing
the decision, he leans on the language of mimesis and catharsis, of
image and limen. His tone is dignified, distant and above all, ironic.
He says, =91I, a free ape, submitted myself to this yoke.'

The Ape Paintings are oils on canvas. While not intended as
illustration, they offer a response to Kafka's text.

15. Roadside Attractions - Kayli Rodgers - to Dec 31
----------------------------------------------------------------

Roadside Attractions presents:
Artist: Kayli Rodgers
Title: Hansel and Gretel
Medium: Stonehenge paper

Roadside Attractions
911 Davenport Road
Toronto, ON M6G 2B7
416-538-3997 or weseeinc@ca.inter.net

In this installation Rodgers explores the anatomy of story-telling =

and visual depiction through the well-known Grimm brothers' tale. =

Utilizing text formed into the graphic framework of a triptych: the =

three long sheets of paper overlapped are reminiscent of pages in an =

open book. The story is conveyed simultaneously through word and =

visual structure. On each sheet an image depicting scenes from the =

story is created by the placement and distortion of cut-out text: the =

woodcutter's hut by the forest; the witch's lair; and the fate of the =

witch. The text-formed imagery allows the viewer to experience the =

immediacy of visual structure as well as that of linear time, a =

characteristic of traditional story-telling. The shadowy empty =

spaces created by the cut-out text/imagery seem intangible and evoke =

the secure or frightful cubby-hole of childhood imagination.

Until December 31

Roadside Attractions is a free art project space in a storefront =

window created and maintained by WeSee Inc. Located at 911 Davenport =

Road (SW corner at Christie Street) in Toronto, Canada. The space is =

usually accessible all day but video installations and illuminated =

work are best viewed after dusk.

work shifts in mood gradually from a soft, delicate and tender image =

through to a dark moody and frenetic tangle of movement and colour. =

Pretti's practice highlights the transmission of particular =

sensations, and in this case, a series of sensations associated with =

a specific event.

Drawing heavily upon the impact of gestural abstraction and action =

painting from the 60's and 70's, Pretti explores line and form in the =

production of her visually aggressive yet delicately feminine works =

on paper. Allowing her work to sway from automatic constructions in =

composition and form to the insertion of figurative elements or body =

parts (sexual organs), Pretti presents an extremely fluid narrative =

Every mark is one detail of a moment; each one is deliberate. While, =

simultanesouly, the composition as a whole describes atmosphere =

(literally and figurativey). Alluding to many modern and contemporary =

themes in art today.

CALL FOR FLIGHT ATTENDANTS OR FLIGHT GROUND STAFF FAMILIAR WITH IN-
FLIGHT SECURITY PROCEEDURES FOR CONTEMPORARY ART PROJECT.

Brazilian artist Carla Zaccagnini is looking for Flight Attendants
and/or Airport Ground Staff who are familiar with the in-flight
security procedures for a project she is completing during a two
month residency at the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU).
Carla will be in Toronto from July - September 2008 producing a new
work for her solo exhibition (September 10 - December 17, 2008) that
requires 20 flight attendants or ground staff from different AIR
LINES to participate in a one evening private performance that will
be videotaped. An announcer will call out a series of security
procedures in different languages. Each attendant who understands the
language will follow through with the visual demonstration that

Jacket instructions; placement and use of oxygen mask, etc. This will
take approximately three hours of your time to complete the performance.

----------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.year01.com/pixelgrain

Year Zero One is pleased to present pixelgrain - a web project by =

artists Michael Alstad + Leah Lazariuk. pixelgrain is an online =

repository of documents and ideas linked to the fading symbol of the =

Canadian prairie grain elevator. By systematically documenting and =

mapping these disappearing structures, and interviewing people =

associated with them, the artists portray a parallel rural community =

in the midst of transition. pixelgrain also functions as a web portal =

that utilises Geographic Information Systems and thematic online =

networks to create a participatory collaborative document that will =

evolve and grow over time.

Year Zero One gratefully acknowledges the support of the Canada =

Council for the Arts which last year invested $11.8 million in media =

arts throughout Canada.

Year Zero One is a media arts collective committed to the production, =

development and distribution of electronic media art through net =

based projects and site-specific public art exhibitions.

TORONTO OUTDOOR ART EXHIBITION
Nathan Phillips Square
July 11 - 13, 2008

and prizes to participating artists. We welcome applications from =

artists working in a wide range of traditional and experimental art =
