However, I thought he'd make a really cool alarm clock, like waking up to an excited friend trying to tell you a thousand things at once, but in a good way. Link

Over 60 DEAN ML Electric Guitars have been hand-painted, illustrated, carved and sculpted by the biggest names in rock & roll, tattooing and modern art, as tribute to heavy-metal's most influential guitarist, Dimebag Darrell Abbott, and to support music education in public schools. Proceeds from the auction will go to support one of America's most exciting music education programs, LITTLE KIDS ROCK. All of the artists donated their time and talent to this project. Artists include, Mark Ryden, Sas Christian, Derek Hess and more! Daniel Martin Diaz work pictured right.

Frank Black's Back

Using his early-Pixies-days nom de rock Black Francis, this September will see the release of a brand new album, "Bluefinger," which was inspired by Dutch painter Herman Brood.

That album's first single, "Threshold Apprehension," will be available not only on "Frank Black 93-03," but as a digital download beginning May 7, and then released as a limited edition 7" single and digital download bundle beginning May 25. More details on "Bluefinger" to be announced shortly.

QWERTY Waffles!

While you may lobby that nothing's sweeter than an automated waffle maker, Chris Dimino just might counter that. This design guru has apparently concocted a retro inspired, and ever-so-slightly altered kitchen appliance that cooks waffle that are a bit wider and more familiar than usual.

This piece of cookware sports an integrated stand for holding four jars of syrup, and the iron itself presses a nifty keyboard each and every time -- caps lock key and all. Of course, we don't expect retailers to start stocking these things anytime soon, but if you're serious about your words waffles-per-minute, we're sure Chris could make arrangements.

Tired of the Same Old Tea?

I get into tea kicks every so often, I must admit, as refined as tea-tottling is, I can't make it stick. Next wave will be a little more interesting though, thanks to fullbloomtea.com. They offer tea balls which when submersed in hot water will bloom into full bouquets ( best made in a clear teapot ). The balls are made of Silver Needle white tea wrapped around dehydrated flowers ( such as Marigold, Amaranth, and Jasmine ) to create 13 different bouquets.

Goodiepal: Craftsman or Technomancer?

There's something so mysterious and magical about this fellow and what he does that makes the world a little less drab. This is a Danish video ( click the image ) of an interview with Gaeoudjiparl/Goodiepal a wonderfully odd musician. Fast forward to about 16 minutes in where he begins to play/interact with a mechanical clockwork songbird. Simply fantastic.

Here's a spotting that couldn't help but catch our eye: Rock and Royal creates chandeliers with attitude, made to order. The company veers sharply away from the standard ring and crown shapes that adorn swank homes and hotels across the world. Fusing posh and punk, Rock and Royal's chandeliers can take any shape—from champagne bottle to skull & bones.

Based in The Netherlands, Rock and Royal was established in 2005 and works with artist Hans van Bentem to create unique light fixtures that are sold to wealthy patrons across the world. Their crystal chandeliers are priced from EUR 12,000 and take approximately two months to design and manufacture.

Fantastic Tiny Cardboard Synths

MusicThing has a post regarding Dan McPharlin, who makes tiny fictional modular synths from cardboard, posts the results on Flickr, and sells them. Their output level is rather low, ie, they don't work, but iffin they ain't the cutest synths I've ever seen!

Molo Flexible Paper Seating

If you haven't seen the video demonstrating Molo's flexible paper seating, it's worth checking out for the charming mother and daughter sitters alone. And if you haven't already heard about the product, Paper Softseating is made entirely from kraft paper and acts like a slinky. Flexible honeycomb structures enable the stools, benches and loungers to change shape so they can be used creatively and interchangeably. The paper is said to become softer with more use but is durable enough for an adult to stand and jump on without causing structural damage. Not intended to be disposable or thought of for short-term use, they are compressible like a folding fan for storage and are flame-retardant treated. They are 100% recyclable and available in natural, brown and black from Molo.

Graham Caldwell : Anatomies

DC-based artist Graham Caldwell transforms glass into sculptures with claws, spikes and other unusual shapes, using the familiar material to conjure disembodied biomorphic shapes. His current solo show "Anatomies" looks at the structural elements of " ribs, teeth, anemones, forests, fungi, fingers, and bodies" to explore "the anatomy of the viewer, the anatomy of glass, and the anatomy of natural things."

Nature Advances

Monday morning brought with it the joyous arrival of three little eaglets, nestled comfortably in their cozy nest, under the watchful gaze of their Eagle foster mother or father (Calder never really made that clear) in Belltown's Olympic Sculpture Park.

The eaglets' birth parent(s) - we'll assume father(s) - were nowhere to be found, leaving behind only a small sign which read Eaglets - Mixed Media - 2007 and the initials pdl, accompanied by the ASL symbols for each letter. This stylized attribution leads the Bent to believe local performance art trio Jason Puccinelli, Jed Dunkerley, and Greg Lundgren, also known collectively as Vital 5 Productions, are responsible for this gift of life.

Dandella GPS

Fantastic design for the future we'll never see.

They call it a Dandella, named for a dandelion floating on the breeze, though it behaves more like a sunflower: this hand-held GPS tracking device lights up and physically bends and points towards its location or another Dandella that it's been synchronised with. If you've lost your friend in the crowd, just activate the Dandella and it'll point you the way you should go to find them. Great for parents looking to keep track of their kids at the mall, or people travelling in a group who like to wander independently for a bit and rejoin the rest later.

Of course, the Dandella needs to be set up with locations first, through a docking system (aptly designed like a basic flower vase) with a computer that allows it to be programmed to track a particular GPS location or a fellow Dandella. When you're out and about, an activated Dandella then relies on GPS technology to identify its own location as well as to find the other location or Dandella that it's configured for.

Designers Yong-kai Tan and Priscilla Lui say they were simply trying to solve the problem of losing someone and having to find them. "The Dandella simplifies the often complex and confusing GPS interface, with many messy buttons and intimidating numbers," Tan adds. Simple, indeed --- you could hand one to a child or a Luddite, and they'd still intuitively know how to use it to find their way home, as it were.

The Dandella took top prize at the International Design Competition Osaka recently and the designers are currently considering avenues for developing it commercially. More information is available at the Design Incubation Centre.

Hate's the New Love

I love this idea. Eighteen artists based in London were asked to design a dartboard with the thing they most hated on it for an exhibition curated by Garudio Studiage that starts at the Dazed & Confused Gallery this week. From left, Bono, moths and drivers on mobile phones were most hated by artists Miles Donovan, James Hollingworth and Annabelle Hartmann respectively. Who are we to disagree?

Op Art at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt

Any major survey of the most important works of Op Art promises to play up the definition of the genre as "art which deliberately demands too much of the eye." The very thought of the collected works of CH favorite artists such as Bridget Riley ("Blaze 4" pictured right) and Victor Vasareley, as well as the other 53 artists represented in the show simply called Op Art at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is dizzying itself. Including both two-dimensional pieces and three-dimensional works, highlights include François Morellet's bright orange neon circles, Gruppo N's "Kinetic Structure" and the “Mirror Room,” which Christian Megert originally created for Documenta 4 in 1968. They're all pictured here, but the exhibit itself has a lot more to discover.
